  • Gujarat Samachar, known for its anti-establishment stance, founded in 1932
  • Today, it is the top-selling Gujarati publication

It is perhaps the second time in its unblemished legacy of 92 years that a crisis has gripped Gujarat Samachar, the leading daily in Gujarat. In 1985, the newspaper’s office and press were burnt as an anti-reservation stir led to communal violence. Forty years on, it faces another crisis with the arrest of Bahubali Shah, the co-owner of Gujarat Samachar, in connection with a money laundering case.

Bahubali Shah, 73, was arrested on Friday morning following raids at multiple locations linked to him. However, the ED has not revealed the reasons for his arrest.

The arrest of the owner of Gujarat Samachar, a staple in most Gujarati households and also in parts of Maharashtra, generated chatter on social media and also echoed in the political corridors.
